Raleigh County man shot, killed by sheriff's deputy
JONBEN, W.Va. -- A Raleigh County man was shot and killed this morning after allegedly opening fire on Raleigh County sheriff's deputies.
Home confinement officers went to the home of Charles Warren Wickline, 46, of Jonben, Thursday to check on him when Wickline allegedly pulled a gun on the officers and sped away on an ATV, according to a news release issued by the Raleigh County Sheriff's Department.
Deputies began a search and found Wickline about 5 a.m. on Willibet Hollow Road. According to the sheriff's department, Wickline hid behind a tree and fired a single round at deputies but was hit in the chest by return fire from one of the deputies.
Deputies and a relative of Wickline attempted CPR until an ambulance arrived, but Wickline was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff's department. Wickline was on home confinement as a condition of bond on a charge of child neglect resulting in death. He was arrested in July 2012 after allegedly backing a vehicle over a 13-month-old boy.
