FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. -- You don't have to be a BASE jumper or have your own rappelling equipment to participate in Bridge Day at the New River Gorge Bridge.
Bridge Day will be Oct. 19 this year and will once again offer catwalk tours and high line (a speed-controlled zip line) rides to the general public.
Catwalk tours will be offered 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bridge Day. Participants will be harnessed and attached to a safety system before walking to the center of the bridge's supports to watch BASE jumpers and rappellers fly by them. The cost is $84.
The high line is a 600-foot cable that carries riders from the bridge to the side of the gorge below. It's like a zip line, but speed is controlled with a belay system. The cost is $125.
Because space is limited for both features, reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 304-574-1300.
On Friday, a lottery was held to determine 20 teams of rappellers who would get to descend from the bridge this year. The rappellers are from 20 states and Canada.
Bridge Day is held every year on the third Saturday in October and is the only day when BASE jumpers can legally jump off the New River Gorge Bridge. It commemorates the 1977 completion of the bridge, the third-longest single arch bridge in the world and, at 876 feet above the New River, the third-highest bridge of any kind in the United States.
