Virginia man, sister indicted in slaying of War mayor
WELCH, W.Va. -- A Virginia man and his sister charged in the slaying of War Mayor Thomas Hatcher are set to stand trial Aug. 13.
Earl J. Click of Grundy, Va., and Rebecca Lynn Hatcher of War are charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy. Hatcher was the mayor's daughter-in-law.
The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports that after a Wednesday hearing, McDowell County Prosecutor Edward Kornish said the pair will be tried separately in different courtrooms.
City workers found the 72-year-old mayor's body in his home July 12, 2012. Kornish had said earlier that a plastic bag was found next to the mayor's head on a bed. There also were signs of a struggle.
Investigators have said that Click and Hatcher had planned to rob the mayor to get money to buy illegal prescription medications. They claim the pair stole $1,100 after his death.
