W.Va. DOT chief tours I-81 construction site
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- West Virginia Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox wanted to see an accident-plagued construction zone on Interstate 81 for himself.
Motorists were stranded on the Interstate's northbound lanes in Berkeley County for several hours Thursday afternoon because of a tractor-trailer accident just ahead of where the construction zone merges traffic from three to two lanes.
Mattox was to meet with construction project workers and tour the site Friday. He was alerted by Sen. John Unger, D-Berkeley, about Thursday's traffic tie-up.
The Journal reported that several accidents have occurred in the construction zone, where work is scheduled to be finished by August.
