Tamarack juried winners
BECKLEY, W.Va. -- "From Hope to Shalom," a photograph by Paul Corbit Brown, of Fayette County, was awarded best of show in the Sixth Annual Best of West Virginia Juried Exhibition, which opened June 16 at Tamarack.
Not only did Brown win the top award of $1,500, his work sold before the show opened, according to gallery manager Zack Hartsog.
Winners of the seven monetary awards included work in wood, sculpture, glass, pottery and fine art.
Other winners were: Andrew Thorne, second place; Chris Dutch and Robin Hammer, Kanawha County, third place; Charles Ott, Lincoln County, award of merit; Michael Cope, Greenbrier County, and Dick Allowatt and Randy Selbe, both of Kanawha County, awards of merit.
Archives library talk
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Author and teacher Joseph A. Comm will present a free book talk and slide show about "Rock Springs Park" at 6 p.m. July 2 in the Archives and History Library at the Culture Center.
The amusement park operated from 1897 to 1970 in Chester, Hancock County. In its heyday, the playground captivated up to 20,000 visitors daily with attractions including the World's Greatest Scenic Railway, the Cyclone rollercoaster and a hand-carved 1927 Dentzel carousel.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Larry Weese took best of show at the 48th Rhododendron Outdoor Arts & Crafts Festival June 9 on the Capitol grounds.
Other winners were: Jennifer Workman, Landmark Award; Agnes Strickland, fine art; Jodi Zickefoose, Sarah Christenson Memorial Award; and Dina Reynolds, 2013 Rhododendron Achievement Award.
