Rene Blaylock brings Daffy, a cat given to her fiance, to the Putnam County animal shelter. Blaylock's daughter is allergic to cats, so Daffy will join more than 50 other animals housed at the shelter.
The new Putnam County animal shelter on W.Va. 62 is expected to be finished Aug. 15. The state-of-the-art facility will feature double the space for animals, as well as updated kennel areas and separate entrances for new and current shelter animals.
Putnam County humane officer Greg Sydenstricker leads a dog brought Wednesday to the current shelter to its kennel area. The current facility cannot separate healthy and sick dogs, but the new facility will quarantine new animals, lowering the risk of infectious disease.
