Braxton woman kept dead son in house, police say

SUTTON, W.Va. -- Police have arrested a Braxton County mother after finding her 8-year-old son dead inside her home.

Valarie Lee Brown, 39, of Sutton, was charged with child neglect resulting in death on Thursday.

On Wednesday, State Police Trooper G.H. Jones and Amy Bailes, a health care worker, went to Brown's house along Salt Lick Road to conduct a child welfare check, according to a criminal complaint filed in Braxton County Magistrate Court.

Brown told them that her son, identified only as "L.B." in the complaint, was not at home.

Bailes asked to enter the house and Brown agreed but said, "please do not hurt" the child, according to the complaint.

Jones then found the child dead and wrapped in a blanket. The child was partially decomposing, according to the complaint. The child had an unspecified medical condition that required regular medical visits.

Brown was being held Thursday in Central Regional Jail in lieu of a $100,000 cash-only bail.
