CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia International Film Festival will host a free screening of the documentary "Oxyana" at 7 p.m. July 23 at Park Place Stadium Cinemas, 600 Washington St. E. The documentary explores the prescription drug epidemic in Oceana, Wyoming County.
"Oxyana" premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, where it won Best Documentary Feature -- Special Jury Mention and Best New Documentary Director for Sean Dunne. However, it has been less warmly received in Oceana, where residents believe Dunne and his crew painted an inaccurate picture and took advantage of them.
Following the film at 8:30 p.m. will be a panel discussion and short Q&A with panelists including Brent Benjamin, chief justice of the West Virginia Supreme Court, and Kim Miller, the director of development at Prestera Center. Their discussion will focus on current prescription drug abuse solutions and ways to improve them. For information, contact the WVIFF at 304-395-6688 or www.wviff.org.
