DANVILLE, W.Va. -- No miners were hurt, but a firefighter was treated for heat and exhaustion following a blaze at a Patriot Coal operation in Boone County, officials said.
The fire occurred at about 12:50 a.m. Thursday on an overload conveyor belt associated with Patriot's Beth Station prep plant, which is located at subsidiary Hobet Mining's huge Hobet 21 mountaintop removal complex near Danville, a state official said.
Leslie Fitzwater, a spokeswoman for the state Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training, said agency investigators were on site overnight and are continuing their investigation.
Janine Orf, a Patriot Coal spokeswoman, said the incident took place "miles from the prep plant."
"It has been extinguished, and no employees were hurt," Orf said.
