Leon man dies in Putnam flooding
LEON, W.Va. -- A man was found dead nearly a mile from his home Monday after drowning in floodwater while trying to clear debris from a bridge near his property.
John Wilbur Mobley Jr., 64, of Leon, was discovered after county dispatch received a call at 6:45 p.m. from family members who couldn't find Mobley. According to Putnam County Sheriff Steve Deweese, there are several streams near Mobley's home, and the area is prone to flooding.
"There are maybe four creeks that run into that particular plain, and it's basically in a valley, in a very wide spot, so it floods, even during not-so-rainy summers," Deweese said.
Mobley was found along Bear Branch Road near 18 Mile Creek. The Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department and the Putnam County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene.
