Trial set for day care owner in girl's death

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. -- A December trial is set for a Wood County day care operator charged in the death of a child who was left in a hot car.

A Wood County grand jury indicted 64-year-old Kenneth Lester Rockhold Sr. of Belleville earlier this month on a charge of child neglect resulting in death.

WTAP-TV reports that Rockhold pleaded not guilty this week. His trial is set for Dec. 10.

Rockhold is accused of leaving 4-year-old Mercedes Wise unattended in a vehicle on Aug. 30, 2012. The girl was found dead in the vehicle. The temperature reached 89 degrees that day.

The girl's mother, Shawna Wise, filed a wrongful death lawsuit in September 2012 against Lester and his wife, Linda Rockhold.
