Barbour County sheriff facing new lawsuit

By Staff reports

PHILIPPI, W.Va. -- Barbour County Sheriff John Hawkins is facing a new lawsuit over Facebook comments he made about sexual assault allegations against him.

Private Investigator Franklin D. Streets Jr. said Hawkins defamed him a post made on July 29. Streets worked with lawyers in a federal lawsuit filed on behalf of a 19-year-old woman who claims that Hawkins handcuffed and raped her during a job interview in 2011. Four women and the teen also provided statements accusing Hawkins of sexually assaulting them.

Hawkins posted a Facebook message to his public profile reading, "Well if there is a good side to any of this, I have received a couple of calls from people who were offered money by the investigator to sign false statements."

Streets said the Facebook post falsely accuses him of a crime by alleging he paid witnesses for statements. He filed his lawsuit in Barbour County Circuit Court this week.

Hawkins and the Barbour County Commission each said they would fight the sexual assault allegations.
