Vigil honors memory of 2 slain in Clarksburg shootings

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. -- Two newspaper carriers killed one week ago in Clarksburg were remembered by more than 100 people at a vigil.

They gathered Thursday night at the Harrison County Courthouse plaza to honor the memories of 70-year-old Freddy Donald Swiger and his son, 47-year-old Fred Swiger. The two men were slain as they delivered The Exponent Telegram, a job they had done for decades.

Sidney A. Muller faces four counts of first-degree murder. The 27-year-old suspect is also charged in the deaths of two other men.

Investigators said the Swigers were innocent bystanders who got caught in a drug deal gone wrong.

The Exponent Telegram said while the vigil was somber, many called for justice and change in Clarksburg before the memorial.

Five clergymen spoke of healing and faith.
