Putnam IDs deputy who allegedly tased teens

By Staff reports

WINFIELD, W.Va. -- The Putnam County Sheriff's Department on Monday released the name of a deputy who allegedly used a Taser on several teenagers at a church camp last month.

Dave Bailey, who has worked in the Putnam County sheriff's office for 11 years, was not on duty and was serving as a camp counselor and pastor when the incident happened. The camp took place in Red House.

Bailey used a personal Taser, not one issued by the Sheriff's Department, according to Putnam County Sheriff Steve Deweese.

None of the teenagers was seriously injured. Bailey has decided to take early retirement, Deweese said, although he could still face battery charges should Putnam County Prosecuting Attorney Mark Sorsaia decide there is evidence to charge him.

"We have done our internal investigation based on disciplinary action, and State Police conducted the criminal investigation," Deweese said.
