PHILIPPI, W.Va. -- The Barbour County Board of Education is planning at least two public hearings on the proposed closing of two schools.
But the board is prepared to hold more if necessary.
Board members are considering closing the Mount Vernon and Volga-Century elementary schools, and consolidating them with Philippi Elementary.
The Inter-Mountain says the first hearing is set for 6 p.m. Sept. 16 at Volga-Century. It will continue at the same time on Sept. 17-18 if necessary.
The board will also take public comments, if necessary, Sept. 19 at Mount Vernon Elementary and Sept 24-25 at Philippi Elementary.
President Bob Wilkins says the board will explain its reasons for proposing the closings at those meeting. Word of the plan first became public last week.
