MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A former Piedmont town official will spend three months in prison for taking surplus government travel trailers for personal use.
John Shingler, 48, of Westernport, Md., pleaded guilty earlier this year to theft of government property. He was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Martinsburg.
Shingler was charged in an indictment with obtaining six travel trailers from the West Virginia State Agency for Surplus Property for Piedmont while serving as the town's foreman in 2009. The trailers were supposed to be used for a water project, offices for the street department and by law enforcement.
Instead, the indictment said, Shingler and five private citizens each paid the town $1,000 for the trailers and took them for personal use.
