5 face charges after early a.m. shooting

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Two men are in jail and one is expected to be charged after a Tuesday morning shooting incident in Charleston.

Charleston Police Sgt. Tony Hazelett said Kalvon Casdorph, 20, of Charleston, and Lajuan Flood, 30, of Detroit, dropped Ladarien Duran Mixon, 23, of Detroit, off at CAMC General Hospital at about 4 a.m. Tuesday with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the groin and leg.

"Physical evidence tells us [Mixon] accidentally shot his own testicle," said Lt. Steve Cooper, chief of detectives for the Charleston Police Department. "It's not uncommon for criminals to shoot themselves in the groin area."

Hazelett said Casdorph and Flood caused a disturbance in the hospital waiting room and fled when security arrived. They were caught by Charleston police a short time later.

Mixon, meanwhile, allegedly gave police a fake name when questioned. Two women from New York, who said they were Mixon's sisters, came to the hospital and gave a different name, which also turned out to be an alias, Hazelett said.

The two women will be charged with obstruction of justice, said Cooper.

Hazelett said police took Mixon's fingerprints and checked them to determine his identity. In all, he said, Mixon has 14 aliases and is wanted in Michigan for violating his parole as a violent offender.

Hazelett said drugs were found on all three men. Cooper said a bag of heroin fell out of Mixon's pants while he was in the emergency room.

Mixon is expected to be charged with felony possession of heroin, Cooper said. Flood was charged with possession of drugs. Casdorph was charged with possession of a substance he allegedly was attempting to pass off as drugs and picked up on a previous state warrant.

Casdorph was being held without bail on the warrant at the South Central Regional Jail on Wednesday. His municipal court bond for the latest charge was set at $312.

Flood was at the South Central Jail with a municipal court bond of $562. Mixon remained in the hospital Tuesday and was expected to be charged after his release.
