Woman jumps from New River Gorge Bridge
FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. -- An unidentified 53-year-old woman leaped to her death from the New River Gorge Bridge on Wednesday after parking her car on the bridge deck, pulling a step stool from her vehicle and climbing to the edge of the 876-foot-high span.
Drivers of several cars crossing the bridge at the time stopped and tried to talk to the woman as she perched on the edge of the bridge, but she did not respond and jumped, according to a National Park Service spokeswoman. The woman's body was found about 40 minutes later in the rugged terrain below the bridge.
The death remains under investigation by National Park Service rangers and Fayette County sheriff's deputies.
