New trash bag program starts Saturday

By Staff reports

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Charleston residents can pick up their city-supplied trash bags starting Saturday at a handful of area stores under a new procedure being rolled out this year.

Residents who received coupons in the mail can pick up their bags at the Foodland and Drug Emporium in Kanawha City, Drug Emporium at Patrick Street, Pile Hardware on the West Side and the Purple Onion in Capitol Market during regular store hours. Other stores may be added later, according to a news release from the mayor's office.

City officials decided to discontinue the old method of using city workers to distribute bags at a designated location -- most recently along Pennsylvania Avenue beneath Interstate 64 -- to save money and encourage people to visit participating retailers, the release said.

Under the new procedure, bags will no longer be available at the city clerk's office or city manager's office.

A second distribution period will be held in February by WasteZero, the company that won the city's annual trash bag contract.
