Harpers Ferry holds second urban deer hunt

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. -- Harpers Ferry is holding its second urban deer hunt to control the animal's population.

The archery-only hunt began Saturday and continues until the regular hunting season ends in December.

Harpers Ferry held its first urban hunt last year.

Rich Rogers with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources said the goal is to reduce or eliminate property damage caused by deer.

A June 2012 report by naturalist Laura Clark said the deer population in Harpers Ferry is up to three times the National Park Service's recommendation of 15 to 35 deer per square mile.
