New award to be given at 'Miners' Celebration'

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- A third-generation coal miner will receive a new award at this year's annual "Miners' Celebration" at Tamarack in Beckley.

Marshall University announced that miners, industry leaders, community members and others will gather Oct. 3 for a reception, dinner and awards ceremony to celebrate West Virginia's coal mining industry.

The Homer Hickam Collier Award is a new award this year recognizing a working coal miner who epitomizes the spirit, dedication and skills of the profession. Scott Lancianese, of Mount Hope, will receive the award from "Rocket Boys" author Homer Hickam, recipient of last year's Spirit of the Coalfields award.

Musician and songwriter John Ellison will receive the 2013 Spirit of the Coalfields honor. Six people will receive Because of You awards recognizing their contributions to coal mining in the state.
