W.Va. city's charter still bans female voters
SISTERSVILLE, W.Va. -- Sistersville's city charter still contains language prohibiting women from voting.
New Mayor Ann Doig said one of the first things she wants to work on is changing the charter, although it would be expensive.
Doig told the Parkersburg News and Sentinel that the city's charter has what she calls "some silly stuff, but she said the city's attorney told the City Council that the city can't go against the U.S. Constitution.
The City Council appointed Doig on Monday to replace David Fox, who resigned midway through his fourth term.
Doig said Fox resigned to move to Wheeling to be closer to his wife's place of employment.
She said she'll serve as mayor until municipal elections are held in March.
