* William Frederick Cody, 63, of Fayetteville, is charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Santanea Byers, of Oak Hill. Police say Cody strangled Byers, who was his girlfriend, and hid her body.
Cody told State Police he and Byers drove to the New River in Thurmond on June 17 and got into an altercation. Cody allegedly loaded Byers' body into the back of his pickup truck, then drove the body to a camp he leases in Monroe County and hid it, according to a criminal complaint. Byers' body had injuries consistent with strangulation, according to the complaint.
* Matthew Paul Gravely, 29, of Hilltop, faces a murder charge after police say he shot and killed Gary Wayne Smith, 22, of Hilltop in April.
When Fayette County sheriff's deputies arrived at the Mountainair Mobile Home Park in Glen Jean, they found Smith lying inside a residence with a gunshot wound to his torso.
Gravely, according to police, came out of a nearby residence holding a handgun.
Police said Smith and Gravely were close neighbors and the shooting incident began as a physical altercation between the men.
