CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Huntington Area Food Bank is welcoming community members to celebrate 30 years of service with cocktails, appetizers and tours, September 19. The open house celebration will run 5 to 7 p.m. at 1327 Seventh Ave., Huntington.
The food bank was founded in 1983 to initially serve Cabell and Wayne Counties. Through its affiliation with Feeding America, the nation's leading domestic hunger relief charity, the food bank grew to serve counties in West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio.
The celebration is one of several events the food bank is sponsoring during September, which is national hunger action month. According to the food bank, one out of four children go hungry every day in our region, while one in six seniors goes hungry in our region.
So far this year, the food bank distributed 2.51 million pounds of food, which is 51 thousand pounds more than this time last year.
Additionally, the food bank hosted two farmers markets for Cabell and Wayne Counties. Through the Kentucky Farms to Food Banks program, the food bank provided thousands of pounds of fresh produce to area residents in need.
The food bank also expanded its mobile pantry operation. They will now host five mobile pantries each month across West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio.For more information on food bank events, visit www.hafb.org or call 304-523-6029.
