State now has custody of boy with gun in school
WHEELING, W.Va. -- Police say a 12-year-old West Virginia boy who brought a gun to school has been moved to a mental health facility.
The Ohio County Board of Education will meet Friday to discuss potential disciplinary actions against the Wheeling Middle School student. He was arrested last week after police found the loaded weapon in his locker.
The Wheeling Intelligencer says the request to put the boy in the custody of the Department of Health and Human Resources was agreed to by prosecutors and the defense.
The Gun Free Schools Act requires any school receiving federal funds to expel for at least one year any student who brings a gun to school. The state and county school boards have similar zero-tolerance policies.
Police don't know where the boy got the gun.
