At the state Capitol Complex, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin kicked off this year's "Day to Serve" Wednesday morning by recognizing volunteers and nearly 500 projects being held across the state. The effort is meant to strengthen communities through volunteer service, and the goal is to get state residents to volunteer one day of their time between Sept. 15 and Sept. 29. These food items, part of a backpack program, will be sent home with schoolchildren before weekends or school vacations.
