Theatre West Virginia closes

By Staff reports

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- After 53 seasons, Theatre West Virginia abruptly announced its closure Wednesday afternoon in a Facebook post.

According to the post, the group's board of directors decided to close the outdoor theater at a meeting Sept. 17.

General Manager Gayle Bowling said the theater had been struggling financially for several years, but after a wet summer and funding reductions, the theater could no longer meet its obligations.

Bowling said employees had been laid off prior to the announcement and that the board planned to liquidate assets to satisfy creditors.

School shows that had been booked for the touring season were being canceled, according to the Facebook post.

Theatre West Virginia was founded in 1955 as the West Virginia Historical Drama Association. Among its best-known productions are "Honey in the Rock" and "Hatfields and McCoys," but the group has performed dozens of popular plays and musicals over the years.

No one answered the phone at Theatre West Virginia offices late Wednesday afternoon.
