CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Putnam County Board of Health and the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department will be providing flu shots at both their booths from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Heritage Day in Poca.
This is the first season that a vaccine protecting against more than three flu strains will be available. Since the late 1980s, scientists noted that two B virus lineage strains circulate to varying degrees each year, and it's difficult to predict which will cause the most illness in a particular influenza season. The new quadrivalent vaccine will address this by protecting against both B strains.
The elderly, young children, pregnant women and those with certain health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease and others, are at increased risk for serious complications and even death from the seasonal flu illness.A number of insurances are accepted and the private pay cost for the flu shot is $38. For more information, call the Health Department at 304-757-2541.
