Downtown building up for sale
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A historic downtown building housing Galperin Jewelry and Ivor's Trunk is up for sale.
Built in 1928 and 1929 on the corner of Hale and Lee streets in downtown Charleston, the Payne Building sits near the Lee Street Triangle.
Bob Shay, who owns the building with Ray Muehlman, said, "We have owned this since 1986, and it is time to start thinking about the future. Selling the building is leading to another part of our lives."
Standing just outside the building on Monday afternoon, Shay said, "Today, it is fully occupied. It was totally empty when we bought it in 1986. We moved Galperin Jewelry over here from Quarrier Street."
Shay said he bought the building from Henry Payne and his wife, Emily.
"Pecks, a great clothing store, was here prior to us coming over here," he said. "We've enjoyed it. We took a lot of care of this building.
"Ivor's will stay open. We've got tenants, and everyone has a lease. If we don't get a reasonable offer, we will probably just take it off the market," Shay said.
An exercise studio and several offices occupy the second and third floors.
Shay expressed disappointment that so many downtown stores moved to Town Center when it opened in November 1983, then to places like Corridor G more recently.
Shay praised Lisa Fischer Casto for rehabilitating the Merrill Photo Supply Building, right around the corner from Galperin Jewelry on Hale Street.
"They will have the Art Store on the first floor," Shay said.
Moving downtown from Bridge Road in South Hills, the Art Store displays original 20th Century and modern American art created by local, regional and nationally known artists.
Galperin Jewelry offers free parking in the garage next to nearby Huntington Bank, just across the street.
Galperin sells a wide variety of jewelry, including wedding rings and watches. It also sells clocks, baby gifts, vases, other glass objects and jewelry boxes.
On Monday, Galperin Jewelry announced the store's "biggest sale ever," during which "everything in the store" will sell between 30 percent and 45 percent off its list price. The sale, celebrating Galperin's 108th year of being in business, ends Oct. 16.
