DOH spokeswoman Carrie Bly said the annual snow-clearing budget is close to $55 million.
Driving a heavy salt truck is a piece of cake for Cobb, who drove heavy construction equipment for 20 years before coming to work for the Division of Highways.
"I got tired of staying away from home all the time," said Cobb, explaining why she switched jobs. "I get a kick out of driving a truck. I'm used to a big truck."
Cobb's truck is decorated with splashes of pink duct tape, just to be a little different. But, like any older vehicle, the circa 2006 Mack truck is showing its age.
"It's got quirks in it you have to get used to," she said. "This truck, unless it's broken down, runs five days a week. If it's snowing, it runs seven days a week."
Which is all the more reason to make sure the salt trucks work before it starts snowing.
"We have a lot of hills," Scites said.
