State approves Heartland sale

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The state Healthcare Authority has signed off on plans for the sale of a Charleston nursing home.

The Healthcare Authority has given a certificate of need to Chesterfield Co. Inc. for the $13 million purchase of Heartland of Charleston from HCR ManorCare, of Toledo, Ohio.

Chesterfield Company Inc. is the name under which Stonerise Healthcare said it would purchase the property.

The nursing home will be the fifth in state for Stonerise, which also owns nursing centers in Belmont, Lindside, Morgantown and Parkersburg.

Heartland's name will change to the Eastbrook Center, said Larry Pack, of Chesterfield Co.

"The internal management at the center will continue to be the same," Pack said. "We're very pleased to maintain the workforce; it's a very good team there."

He added that the company wants to improve the clinical capabilities at the center, improve service, grow the staff's expertise and take care of the community needs.

HCR Manorcare has appealed a ruling in which a jury awarded Tom Douglas $91 million in damages after he sued over the care of his 87-year-old mother, Dorothy Douglas.

Dorothy Douglas died in 2009 after living about three weeks at Heartland of Charleston. She had Alzheimer's and other ailments and was supposed to be staying at Heartland only until a bed opened up at another facility. Douglas died on Oct. 11, 2009, after having left Heartland on Sept. 23.

Before she arrived Heartland, Dorothy Douglas could walk and speak, but after three weeks, she had become seriously dehydrated and was confined to a wheelchair, lawyers said during the trial, according to previous reports from the Gazette.

The West Virginia Supreme Court has not yet ruled on the case.

Pack said the case will not affect Chesterfield's purchase of the facility.

"That does impact us at all," Pack said. "That stays with HCR Manorcare."
