CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Pumpkins in the Park
The Junior League of Charleston holds its 5th annual Pumpkins in the Park 5K Run/Walk and Children's Fun Run from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 13 at the state Capitol.
Racers may pick up their packets and bibs at 1 p.m. and the race begins at 2 p.m. Registration is $30.
The Children's Fun Run is free. All racers who wear a costume will have a chance to win an additional prize.

The purpose of the Junior League of Charleston is purely charitable and its focus is on addressing issues affecting women and children in our area. The proceeds from this event will benefit the activities and programs supported by the Junior League.
Empty Bowls Fundraiser
Manna Meal Inc. will hold our its first Empty Bowls fundraiser from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at St John's Episcopal Church, 1105 Quarrier St. Cost is $25.
Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others work with the community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests pay for a simple meal of soup and bread and, in exchange, are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world.
Manna Meal soup kitchen has partnered with Taylor Books and Capitol Clay Arts Co. to make bowls as fast as they can.
Long John Silver's pie offer
Long John Silver's is raising money for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals by encouraging customers to make a donation during October.
On Oct. 14, customers who make a donation will receive a free slice of pie, honoring National Dessert Day.
The Woman's Club of South Charleston will be observing its 90th year anniversary with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 20 at its clubhouse, 214 D St., South Charleston.
