Two children dead in Logan County fire
LOGAN, W.Va. -- State fire marshals say an electrical problem is to blame for a house fire that killed two children in Logan County early Monday morning.
Logan County Fire Chief Scott Beckett said the children -- ages 3 and 4 -- were unable to escape the home on Canton Lane. The duplex-style home is split into two units and adults on both sides escaped unharmed.
No smoke detectors were found during an initial inspection of the unit where the children lived, he said.
State Assistant Fire Marshals Shawn Alderman and Brad Harley investigated and determined that electrical wiring caused the fire, Beckett said. The blaze broke out at about 5 a.m. and took more than an hour to get under control. Firefighters tried to get to the children, but the fire was too large and intense, he said.
Family members identified the children to WSAZ-TV as 3-year-old Dontarius Gardner and 4-year-old Shania Sidney. Sidney attended preschool at Verdunville Elementary School. Counselors were at the school Monday helping students and teachers cope with the loss, a Logan County Schools employee said.
