Open Stage for Kids
The next Open Stage for Kids will take place at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Unity of Kanawha Valley, at Bridge and Myrtle roads in South Hills. Youth performers ages 4-14 are invited to share their talents. The Buckhannon Choral Society will present a fall concert featuring folk music at 3 p.m. Sunday in Wesley Chapel on the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan College. The choir will be joined by percussionist Holden Akers-Toler, violinist Charity Manspeaker, bassist Richard Manspeaker and flutist Katy McClane. The choir is accompanied by pianist Jeanne DeFoe, who will be joined by Sharon Walton for two pieces. The choir is under the direction of Stephen Benson. Admission prices are $8 for seniors and students, $10 for adults.
Pet costume contest
New Hope Animal Rescue will sponsor its 17th annual pet Halloween costume contest at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the large shelter at Valley Park, Hurricane, near the wave pool. Registration begins at 1 p.m. and judging begins at 1:30 p.m. Alan Hoover, from WMXE 100.9 FM, will host the event. Categories for entry include scariest, funniest, prettiest, most original, pet/owner look-alike, former shelter pet and group costume; there is a $3 entry fee per category. Trophies will be awarded for the first-, second- and third-place winners and all participants will receive a ribbon. A pet photographer will be available. There will be raffle prizes and more. Proceeds will benefit NHAR's spay/neuter and medical programs as well as NHAR's mission of building a no-kill animal shelter in the Putnam/Kanawha county area.
