Humane association board

The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association board of directors will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at its location at 1248 Greenbrier St.

Charleston Area Alliance

Charleston Area Alliance's next Business After Hours will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Charleston Embassy Suites, 300 Court St. The hotel will host an Oktoberfest celebration with traditional German food and entertainment. There will also be door prizes. The early-bird rate is $15 for alliance members and $25 for nonmembers. Online advance registration ends at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Spirituality workshop

The West Virginia Institute for Spirituality will feature Catherine "Kitty" Byus at a workshop titled, "Brain: Under Construction" that focuses on the ever-growing, ever-changing brain development of young children, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at 1601 Virginia St. E. Food drive

Students at Mountaineer Montessori School, 308 20th St., have organized a food drive for Manna Meal, a soup kitchen that provides meals to the needy at St. John's Episcopal Church. The school will accept donations of nonperishable food items, including those most urgently needed by Manna Meal: canned and powdered milk, peanut butter and jelly, canned soup, canned meats, macaroni-and-cheese mix, SpaghettiOs, spaghetti sauce with meat, and dried spaghetti and pasta noodles. Canned items should have pull-tab tops. Donations may be brought to the school during normal school hours through Nov. 12. Turkey-prep programs

The Kanawha County Public Library will have programs on preparing a Thanksgiving turkey at several library branches. Kerri Wade from WVU Extension Service shares tips on properly preparing a turkey, from when to purchase it to how long to cook it. Wade includes recipes for healthy, budget-friendly side dishes to go along with the bird. The program is for adults. Participating branches include: Dunbar Branch Library, 11 a.m. Saturday; Cross Lanes Branch Library, 11 a.m. Nov. 8; St. Albans Branch Library, 2 p.m. Nov. 9; Riverside Public Library, 6 p.m. Nov. 11; Main Library, 12:10 p.m. Nov. 13 (bring your lunch); and Elk Valley Branch Library, 6 p.m. Nov. 19.
