State Police investigate money missing from holiday fundraiser
POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. -- State Police are investigating missing money from the Mason County Sheriff's Association's annual holiday fundraiser.
The association had hired a solicitor to collect cash donations for its "Shop with a Cop" program. The drive was conducted in Mason County and in Meigs and Gallia counties in Ohio, according to a news release issued this week by the State Police.
The solicitor called people who live in those areas and then sent someone else to collect cash donations and checks. State Police believe some of the cash did not get deposited into the proper account, according to the release. The hired solicitor is being investigated for fraud, but that person's name has not been released.
Troopers ask that all donors contact the Lakin Correctional Facility detachment near Point Pleasant. Troopers can be reached at 304-675-0850.
