W.Va. to mark Battle of Droop Mountain

HILLSBORO, W.Va. -- The commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Droop Mountain is continuing in West Virginia.

The Division of Natural Resources said the last in a series of hikes at Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park in Pocahontas County will take place Tuesday.

The all-night 30-mile hike, which starts near Lewisburg and concludes at Droop Mountain, will help mark the Civil War battle that occurred there on Nov. 6, 1863.

A ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, when a native-stone marker will be placed at the site. A bronze placard will list known men who died or died as a result of wounds suffered in the battle.
