Low turnout expected for levy election

By Staff reports

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Although Kanawha County Clerk Vera McCormick said early voting totals for Saturday's school levy election were not bad, county officials expect a low turnout on election day.

"Usually on a Saturday, it's really low," McCormick said. She predicted a turnout between 9 and 12 percent.

"Some of the counties averaged 7 percent this year," she said.

McCormick said 4,166 people cast early ballots for the levy election, including about 700 on the last day of early voting. Early ballots accounted for about 3 percent of the county's 134,000 registered voters.County voters are asked to approve a $24 million school levy that includes about $3 million in funding for the Kanawha County Public Library system. Polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
