What's old is new again (photo)

Chris Dorst
The iconic Budget Tapes and Records sign in Kanawha City is replaced Friday afternoon by Reaford Signs workers (left to right) Steve Davis, Paul Hall and Brian Hall. The store's owners had to get permission from Charleston zoning officials to replace the original, age-worn sign because it's too big for the city's current zoning rules. The sign, with its hippie and clouds of incense, went up in the early 1970s and had been showing its age. Other historic signs, from the downtown Firestone store and the Fountain Hobby Center on West Washington Street, also received zoning variances and will be restored and replaced.
