Mountaineer Food Bank gets $10,000 award
GASSAWAY, W.Va. -- The Braxton County-based Mountaineer Food Bank was awarded $10,000 Tuesday as part of the annual Tom's of Maine 50 States for Good Program.
The food bank will use the funds to support its Mobile Pantry Program, which serves 48 counties throughout the state. The pantry partners with local feeding programs to distribute frozen meats, dairy and produce in "insecure communities," according to a press release from Mountaineer Food Bank.
The program distributed more than 450,000 pounds of food so far in 2013, which helped 17,000 people.
Tom's of Maine carries natural personal hygiene products, such as toothpaste, mouthwash and deodorant. The company awarded 14 other nonprofit groups across the country -- chosen by online voting -- a share of $150,000 award.
