Newspapers ready campaigns to help those in need
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The holidays are fast approaching, and with this special season comes the spirit of giving.
With that in mind, the Gazette Charities Christmas Fund and the Daily Mail's Neediest Cases Appeal are preparing for another season of raising much-needed funds for people in our community.
The Gazette's fund, started in 1996, will support 10 local help agencies: Children's Home Society, Covenant House, Daymark, Gabriel Project WV, Heart & Hand, Jericho House, Manna Meal, Mountain Mission, Salvation Army and Union Mission.
Funds donated by readers go to these agencies, which use them to meet the needs of the people who come through their doors seeking help.
The Daily Mail's fund began in 1961. It provides help to individuals and families who express a need -- for instance, medicines not covered by insurance or dental work not covered by Medicare or Medicaid.
Each newspaper, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, will feature stories illustrating the struggles faced by members of our community and asking for your help.
But it's never too early to make a donation, which can be made out to the Gazette Charities Christmas Fund or Daily Mail Neediest Cases Appeal. The mailing address for each is: 1001 Virginia St. E., Charleston, WV 25301.
Each newspaper covers all administrative costs of its fund. All donations go to people in need. Please help our friends and neighbors.
