No hazards found at old Martinsburg foundry
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A consulting firm says it found no environmental problems at the site of a former foundry in Martinsburg.
Boggs Environmental Consultants' findings are good news for a team that wants to redevelop the old Matthews Foundry property.
The Matthews Foundry Team includes Main Street Martinsburg, the West Virginia Redevelopment Collaborative, city officials and others with expertise in redeveloping former industrial sites.
The Journal reports that Joe Freeman with Boggs Environmental Consultants visited the site in September. He told Matthews Foundry Team members on Friday that soil samples found no trace of contaminants outside the foundry.
Freeman said tests found trace amounts of lead paint and asbestos inside the building. But he said both could be treated easily and don't pose a hazardous threat.
