PRINCE, W.Va. -- Time is running out for the public to comment on a proposal to charge fees at three free campgrounds in the New River Gorge National River.
The National Park Service said the public comment period runs through Sunday.
Visitors would pay $5 per night to use the Army Camp, Glade Creek and Grandview Sandbar campgrounds near Prince. All three campgrounds have limited amenities.
The Park Service cites two reasons for the proposal: finances and crime.
According to the Park Service, there have been numerous visitor complaints and incidents in the campgrounds, including domestic disputes and alcohol-related crime. Similar issues at other comparable campgrounds in the national park system declined after nominal fees were implemented.
