The Lay Academy of Religion ends fall session
The Lay Academy at First Presbyterian Church in Charleston will end this session with guest speaker Dr. Ron Buckalew at 4 p.m. Sunday at the church, 16 Leon Sullivan Way. There is no charge.
Dr. Buckalew grew up at First Presbyterian and Morris Harvey College (now the University of Charleston) and has served as a pastor to churches in Charleston, Spencer, Ronceverte and Natural Bridge, Va. He is an adjunct instructor for West Virginia State University.
Dr. Buckalew will address three questions of contemporary importance: Do modern science and sacred tradition have any grounds for a positive conversation with one another anymore?; Do modern science and Christology have any relevant contributions to offer to a politically and religiously pluralistic world?; and: What bearing do insights from answering questions 1 and 2 have on our understanding of what it means to be human and on our recognition of the basic necessities for the survival of the human race?
