Man drowns after canoe overturns in New River
FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. -- National Park Service rangers on Tuesday were investigating the drowning death on Monday of a 36-year-old Fayette County man whose flat-bottomed canoe overturned in the New River near Meadow Creek in the New River Gorge National River.
Rangers said Gary Lee Adkins of Pax was paddling through Meadow Creek Rapids with his 15- and 16-year-old stepsons when their canoe capsized.
One of the boys was unable to swim, and was assisted to shore by his brother, who in turn brought Adkins to shore.
Rangers said the brothers tried to administer CPR to Adkins, but were unable to revive him. Rangers arrived at the scene and, with help from CSX personnel and equipment, were able to move Adkins body to an ambulance.
