Men restrained Cross Lanes purse thief, police say

By Staff reports

CROSS LANES, W.Va. -- Two men helped restrain a purse thief at the Kroger store in Cross Lanes Thursday, police said.

A man took a woman's purse from her shopping cart as she loaded groceries into her car, Kanawha County Sheriff's Department Cpl. Brian Humphreys said in a news release. The suspect, Richard Jason Palmer, 28, of Nitro, fled on foot from a Kroger employee.

Two men driving by saw the incident and got out of their vehicle to help, according to the release. The men chased Palmer, who dropped the purse, to a nearby parking lot. They held him there until Cpl. Kenneth Gaddy arrived.

Paramedics treated Palmer for minor injuries sustained in the arrest. Palmer was charged with grand larceny and is being held in the South Central Regional Jail in lieu of a $10,000 bail.
