WESTON, W.Va. -- A prosecutor says a new charge has been filed against a man in a case involving two Lewis County women who disappeared in 1999.
Lewis County Prosecutor Mike Smith told The Exponent Telegram that David Hughes was charged Wednesday with conspiracy to commit robbery of Maxine Stalnaker and her daughter, Mary Friend.
The women disappeared in December 1999 after they left their Jane Lew home on a Christmas shopping trip. Their bodies have never been found.
Murder, kidnapping and robbery charges filed in September against Hughes and two other men were dropped last month. Those charges were dismissed after Smith raised concerns that the magistrate who issued the criminal complaints had been involved in the original investigation as a law enforcement officer.Smith said additional charges could be filed.
