SC council OKs on second reading ordinance to update building code
SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- South Charleston City Council approved on second reading an ordinance to update city building code to meet newly adopted West Virginia standards.
Also Thursday, Recreation Director Arnett Hoston reported that renovations to the gym at the South Charleston Recreation Center are now complete with the recent installation of two new basketball goals. Upgrades included installation of new flooring and two new scoreboards, he said.
"The gym is ready for the first South Charleston High School basketball game Dec. 16 at 7:30 [p.m.]," Hoston said.
Also, Mayor Frank Mullens announced that volunteers are welcome at the Shop With a Cop Christmas gift event to be held at Target Dec. 10 at 6 p.m.
The outreach program, designed to build relationships between police and elementary school-aged underprivileged children, allocates funds to purchase gifts for family members. The city contributed $1,000 to this year's effort.
The children "will shop, wrap presents and have some pizza" while interacting with police officers, Mullens said.
