Overbrook Elementary wins school food drive

By Staff reports

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Overbrook Elementary School won this year's Circle of Hope canned food drive contest, bringing in 24 barrels of food for Mountain Mission.

Mountain Mission is a nonprofit group that serves Kanawha Valley families with unexpected emergency needs assistance "in the financial and in-kind areas."

The food donations will help fill Christmas baskets for families needing a hand this holiday season.

Kanawha County Schools Superintendent Ron Duerring and Mountain Mission Executive Director John Roberts presented the award to Overbook students Friday morning.

Eighteen area schools participated in the contest, bringing in more than 77 barrels of food.

"Mountain Mission is blessed to have so many schools give generously, especially during this time of year. All the food that was collected will help put a warm meal on the table for a lot of people," Roberts said.
