QUICK, W.Va. -- A 10-year-old girl was shot and killed Sunday in Kanawha County in what police say was an accidental shooting involving another child.
A 911 call was made around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, reporting that the girl was accidentally shot while she and a 9-year-old boy were "target practicing" with a shotgun in Quick, according to dispatchers.
The girl received injuries to her chest and arm and underwent surgery at CAMC General Hospital, where she died overnight.
The shooting happened near a creek bank in the 3800 block of Pentacre Road.
The names of the two minors were not released by Monday evening, and the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department is still investigating.
Police confirmed that the two children were not siblings.
Kanawha County sheriff's deputies, the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority, local firefighters and HealthNet all responded to the scene. A HealthNet helicopter response was canceled when the ambulance was determined to be the fastest mode of transportation.
